Wight Church Network is an information exchange for Congregations and Christians on the Isle of Wight and a central source of information for those who wish to find out more about the Church and her activities on the Island. Now is a time for the oneness of the church to be evident in co-operation, sharing of resources and the building of relationships to be effective in the territory God has given us. We encourage you to explore the diversity of the Church on the Island by browsing through our pages. We invite you to send in more information to extend our information base and make known the activities of your own congregation or organisation. We would ask you tell others that we are here. Share with us in a spirit of unity as we seek to promote partnership, awareness and co-operation in the Isle of Wight Church and transformation in our community.
Newchurch, Isle of Wight
The earliest church at Godshill was built in the Saxon period, possibly during the reign of Edward the Confessor, but the current large building is almost entirely 14thth century, built by the monks of Sheen Priory. The hill on which the church stands, however, was the site of pagan worship long before Christianity reached the isle of Wight. All Saints is the largest medieval church on the Isle of Wight, and one of the most visited and photographed parish churches in England. Part of that popularity rests with the treasure of All Saints, a wall painting showing Christ crucified, not on a wooden cross, but on a lily flower.
There was a previous place of worship on the site for over years. By the South, door stands the font. This one is a replacement for the original font, dated , which disappeared and was recently discovered being used as a bird bath in a Newport garden. It has been returned to the Church and now stands further down the South aisle. This fine effigy sculptured in alabaster is one of the most outstanding of the 16th century and was saved from the earlier church on this site.
